How Much Mulch Do I Need?

The right amount of mulch depends on its type and purpose. Generally, a 2 to 4-inch (5 to 10 cm) layer is ideal. Too thin, and it won't suppress weeds or retain moisture effectively. Too thick, and it can prevent water and oxygen from reaching the soil and plant roots.

Benefits of Mulch

  • Regulates Soil Temperature: Acts as an insulator, keeping soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
  • Retains Moisture: Reduces evaporation from heat and wind, which means less frequent watering.
  • Reduces Weed Growth: Blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds and prevents new seeds from taking root in the soil.
  • Enriches Soil: Organic mulches (like bark, leaves, or compost) decompose over time, adding vital nutrients to the soil.
